Culture and Society
In class were learn't about different types of cultures like sub-culture, counter culture and culture shock. This was interesting to me becuase before I didn't know that these existed. We also talked about how society see the people in these cultures and how they are treated. It was interesting to learn that some cultures are not accepted by everyone and it would seem strange to some foreigners visiting the giving country. This is becuase I have experienced it for myself the first time I came to New York. I was in a culture shock because of how the people interacted with one another and what would seem normal for the average New Yorker would of seem weird to me.

what elements and aspects of culture that you grew up with from your home...made you look at new yorkers in this way and experience culture shock...?? (i.e. what changed or what seemed foreign to you that you were used to already)
ReplyDeleteSome of the elements are the way a child would be brought up. For example some American children are very rude to their parents or adults, whereas in my home country they can't be, otherwise their parents would discipline them immediately. I've seen situations here where the child tells their parents disrespectful things and the parents doesn't even correct the child. Another example is that New Yorkers are not as polite as you would think. They have no manners or courtesy in the streets or even on the roads. In my country its the total opposite where the good or the bad would have manners or have some sort of courtesy to you and this because of the way they brought up. Its an unspoken rule that where ever you go you must have respect for your elders and have manners. In New York, everybody is about their own business and that doesn't count for them. I'm not saying that all New Yorkers are like this but a lot of them are.
ReplyDeleteVeruy nice conversation guys, but I don't know if I would say that Trinidadians are one way and New Yorkers are another way, Nigel. My people are from Trinidad, and I can tell you from experience, some of them are hella rude! Lol. Nice work!
